Physicians have an entire range of options for diagnosis and detecting cancer in the body. When a problem is sensed, the following tests are most commonly the first used to determine the presence and severity of cancer:

Biopsy – This is a test performed on a sampling of a tumor or cells in order to determine if there is malignancy, and how drastic the cancer present. Breat cancer is often diagnosed after a positive biopsy of breast tissue following an irregular mammogram.

Mammogram – This is a test performed when a patient or doctor discovers a lump in breast tissue. It is very similar to an X-Ray. Sometimes the result is the discovery of a fibroid tumor, other times it is a very early determination that the patient has breast cancer.

Endoscopy – This is a test done to diagnose cancer in the digestive tract. The physician will insert a tube through which a camera can travel to various body parts to look for cancer, etc. Sometimes, this is a method used to obtain a sample for biopsy.

Pap Smears, X-Rays and CAT Scans can also be used to diagnose and evaluate cancer within a patient. But most important in the line of prevention are self examinations. If anything seems to be not as it should be, you need to contact your doctor immediately for further testing.
