When a patient experiences a recurrence of a disease that has been treated successfully, they are said to be experiencing a relapse. The term is most commonly used to refer to patients that have been treated successfully for some type of cancer. Relapse is very common with cancer patients, and generally the longer a patient is cancer-free the less chance there is that they will experience a relapse.
